There is no doubt that rail plays a key role in every Australian’s life. Only in 2006 a whopping 634 million rail journeys were made in urban areas and a total of 9.4 million journeys in non urban areas. Another 132.7 million journeys were made on tram services. Many readers may be thinking that because they don’t use rail as a means of transport they should not care about rail, and there is where they are wrong! When we say that rail affects everyone’s life, we refer to passenger services, but also we are talking about the enormous impact that rail freight has in the community and in Australia’s economy.
