The Rail Industry through the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) is constantly seeking ways of getting our message across to the Commonwealth, States and Territory governments.

We have accomplished great achievements, but we recognise that there is still much more to do.

You can help us get our message across! Read the current campaigns and learn how to get involved.

Have Your Say

More than ever before Australia needs better transport in its capitals and better all urban centres.

Rail Transport - supported by RailMates - delivers compelling benefits for the economy, environment, community and the Australian way of life.

It is really important that the Members of the Parliament know that you support all efforts to have rail fulfil its capacity for all Australians.

National Rail Safety Awareness Week

The second National Rail Safety Awarness Week will be held from 23rd to 28th July 2007.

This event was born out of the need to raise awareness in the community of the risks associated with dangerous behaviour around trains, particularly at Level Crossings.

For more information about this event please visit the Australasian Railway Association website at www.ara.net.au

Railway Level Crossing Safety

Safety at railway level crossings is very important for road users, train passengers and crews. Every year an average of 37 road users, vehicle occupants and pedestrians, die as a result of collisions with trains at railway level crossings.

Every one of these collisions could have been avoided.

Drivers, riders, cyclists and pedestrians are urged to slow down, look carefully, listen for trains and obey the road rules at railway level crossings.

ARA has developed a new ‘Railway Level Crossing Safety’ webpage. This contains:

  • Interesting statistics about railway level crossing crashes and safety tips.
  • Detailed information on the industry-government initiative, the National Railway Level Crossing Behavioural Strategy, its education and enforcement projects and available resources to help industry promote this issue.

National Passenger Transport Agenda

The ARA launched its National Passenger Transport Agenda at AUSRAIL in November 2006. The Agenda was commissioned to provide a way ahead to significantly improve the effectiveness of Australia’s public transport sector. It presents an integrated and coordinated approach to public transport, involving all levels of government, public transport operators and the business community.

This is a pressing matter that impacts on economic, environmental, health and social issues. Australia is the only OECD country without a national ‘moving people’ strategy. With petrol prices driving a rise in public transport patronage, impacting on already constrained passenger systems, action is needed now to bring about major improvements in our public transport system.

The National Passenger Transport Agenda presents the status quo of public transport in Australia, including the challenges presented by a system that widely sees responsibility for transport issues cross various governments departments and conflicting interests. Furthermore, it presents a compelling case for action. Most importantly, it lays down a comprehensive list of proposed actions for stakeholders.

RAILmates Briefing Forums

The ARA has begun a series of Briefing Forums around Australia to help rail get its message out that rail plays an essential role in every Australian’s life.

Rail not only offers economic rewards, but it also provides environmental and social advantages when compared to other modes of transport.

Representatives from all levels of government and its agencies, industry and a wide and diverse range of community interest groups have been invited to a series of Briefing Forums around Australia to hear rail’s messages about:

  • Transport issues and the emerging threats to our way of life.
  • Benefits of rail as an alternative choice of transport for freight and passengers in our capital cities.
  • Opportunities for action.

Prominent experts in transport and urban planning have also presented their individual views to widen the debate.

These Briefing Forums have been held in the following locations and the presentations are available for downloading:

Further Briefing Forums will be held early 2008, details of which will be posted on this website.
