National Rail Safety Week Major rail operators and government agencies in Australia and New Zealand launched a National Rail Safety Week in 2006 to raise community awareness of risks associated with dangerous behaviour around railways. This annual event now promotes safe behaviour around level crossings and highlights the dangers of illegal entry (trespass) to railway tracks or other areas not open to public access. The rail industry is taking positive and proactive steps to address these issues by focussing on Education, Enforcement and Engineering as part of the solution. Level crossing safety is a national issue, which does not respect State borders. Cooperation is needed between all levels of government, the road and rail industries, enforcement agencies and relevant road safety authorities. Learn more
